Advanced micromachining of glass

【活動資訊】In this presentation, two topics about laser- induced micromachining of glass are introduced.
First topic is metal particle manipulation by laser irradiation in glasses. Laser illumination to the metal particle in glass heats the metal particle. The glass in the neighborhood of the laser-heated metal particle softened; hence, the metal particle is able to migrate in the glass. The migration phenomena and the driving force of the metal particle toward the light source in the glass provided by laser illumination were discussed. The variation in the interfacial tension between the glass and the metal particle induced by the temperature gradient caused migration and driving force was calculated via a numerical temperature calculation.
Second topic is laser-induced plasma drilling of silica glass. Fiber fuse is a phenomenon that plasma runs in an optical fiber toward the light source. Fiber fuse is initiated when the fiber is heated above 1,050˚C, because it becomes absorptive. I applied this phenomenon for the drilling of glass. When the plasma region was reached to the glass surface, the glass material was ejected. As a result, a hole was drilled and the shape was the same as the plasma. The hole formation process was observed with a high speed camera.
